Yeah i get to travel around a little bit – I’m based in Nottingham but we have offices in Edinburgh and Cardiff so I go to both of those places occassionally. I also get to go to conferences, usually around the UK, but sometimes abroad -I got to go to one in San Francisco a few years ago, which was amazing! I’m hoping to get some more fieldwork over the next few years – i’ve done fieldwork in Spain, Iceland and Chile so far! I’m hoping to go back to Iceland sometime and possibly to Patagonia (southern South America) to study more volcanoes.

      Hi Emiiwilde

Yes I do get to travel. As I said in my profile, I need very, very powerful X-rays to analise my protein crystals, so I have to go to special X-ray generators called synchrotrons. The closest one is near Oxford and is called Diamond Light Source. It was on BBC Breakfast last week! 😉 You can have a look here:

There’s also a synchrotron near Paris that I travel to – I was there twice in May ;-). Another one is in the south of France, near Grenoble, surrounded by the Alps. Finally, I also go one in Switzerland, near Zurich.

Apart from these trips I do to collect data, I also get to go to conferences and meetings with collaborators. Last year I went to Istanbul in Turkey, I’ve been to Germany a few times. I even spent a month in Helsinki in Finland when I was a PhD student to work with other scientists that we collaborated with. I’ve also been to a few places in the UK, like York, Leeds, Manchester.

So. we are busy travelling bees 😉

      Hi there,

A lot! Between conferences, meetings with colleagues and field work (when I’m lucky), I do see quite a lot of places on a annual basis. I have strong connections with Norway, Tanzania and France – so that’s where I go relatively regularly. And then there are the conferences – last year I went to Argentina, I’m due in Niger early next year and I might be able to go to New Zealand next year! So lots of travelling – which is GREAT! 🙂

Yes, i’ve been lucky in that I’ve be able to travel to a number of conferences of the years. Some of the best were Finland,Japan and Mexico. I’ve been to America a few times (when I lived in Canada – its much closer!) and recently I’ve been going to conferences in the UK – Birmingham, London, Edinburgh.

Yes I get the opportunity to travel in my work. It depends very much on the project I am working on. The last two years I mainly travelled to France and Germany. Before that I went to the USA a lot. Now it seems like I have to travel to Australia. I also get the opportunity to visit some of the telescopes. We have telescopes in Chile, Las Palmas and Hawaii. I have not been to the ones in Hawaii yet.
