Question: How come you didn't become a vet? I have always wanted to be a vet but i think your field of work is really intersting. How come you changed paths?
I stopped wanting to be a vet for 2 reasons really:
1) when we started dissecting animals in biology class I didn’t think I’d be confident doing similar things to living animals (surgury). The thought of it made me too nervous!
2) I had volunteered at a few vet practices over the years and it really had to be a business (make money) and was not just about helping animals. There were some practices, like tail docking and ear clipping that are done but with no practical purpose – just for ‘looks’, and some that case chronic pain, like cat de-clawing or having an animal put to sleep because the owners were moving that I didn’t agree with and wouldn’t have done – but then you loose clients. I was told to be a vet you had to be a ‘people person’ whereas I’m an ‘animal person’. lol
I’m glad I pursued animal welfare as I can still help animals and have learned lots about them but I don’t have to worry about the ‘business’ aspects.
If you’d like any more info on Animal welfare, I’d be happy to give it to you 😀

More information would be great, I’m really interested 🙂 It would be nice to maybe explore the possibilities of a different field of work. 🙂

This is the type of research we do where I work now:

This is what is done at the Uni I used to work at:

There’s also some good basic textbooks on animal welfare available from Amazon. The one by M.C. Appleby and B.O. Hughes is particularly useful.
Let me know if you have any questions, etc. 🙂
