Question: I read a book once where someone puts a mouthful of water in their mouth, put a gun in their mouth, pulled the trigger and their head exploded. Does that happen in real life?

  This sounds like a very dangerous thing to do! The moment you open your mouth the water will start to leak out so I do not think the water will influence the outcome of the projectile out of the gun and as such the head will not explode as such however you are going to damage very important parts of your head depending on the angle of the gun and thus the path of the bullet. You will end up either dead or seriously disabled.
