All our cells have 46 chromossomes, where our genetic material (DNA) is. However, the sexual cells (the mum’s ovum and the dad’s spermatozoid) only have 23 because they get only 1/2 of the genetic material. That way, when the ovum and spermatozoid are joined, the egg has 46 chromossomes. That’s why you inherit 1/2 your genetic information from your mum and 1/2 from your dad.
All your mum’s ovum have X chromossomes but 1/2 of the dad’s spermatozoids has an X chromossome and the other half has Y. So the sex of a baby depends on which kind of spermatozoid it comes from, one that has X or one that has Y.
